ABTA: Travel insurance vital for older people

Fri 9th May 2008

The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has admitted that travel insurance is more expensive for older people, particularly those with pre-existing medical conditions, but said it would be "very foolish" not to take it out.

Sean Tipton, a spokesperson for the organisation, noted that older people are increasingly opting for adventurous holidays as a result of lengthening life spans and the increased affluence of the generation.

"If you have a pre-existing medical condition and you decide not to take out insurance because of the fact that it's more expensive, then it's very foolish because you're more likely to need it than other people," he said.

A recent survey carried out by the Foreign Office found that 20 per cent of the over-55s took risks on holiday that they would not normally take at home, while 65 per cent of the same age group did not take out travel insurance on their last trip abroad.
